South Molton United C of E Primary School has raised an incredible £1,110.22 for Amigos!

Pupils at South Molton currently sponsor 7-year-old Rebecca Akello so she can go to school and get an education.

Rebecca is living with a disability and struggles to walk; she is cared for by her mother after her father died in a robbery that went wrong. Life is hard and mother survives by doing low-paid household chores, such as washing clothes and fetching water.

Thanks to South Molton school’s sponsorship Rebecca is able to go to school every day and enjoy a hot dinner. She is also provided with a school uniform and books and pens - without these materials she wouldn’t be allowed into school.

The Pupil Ethos Group at South Molton United C of E Primary School raised this incredible amount through a fundraising event which involved each class competing to see how many laps of the school field they could complete in 14 minutes.

They children donated £1.00 to enter the event and also raised sponsorship from friends and family – the more laps they completed, the more funds they raised. The Pupil Ethos Group also came up with the idea of a cake sale to raise funds.

The fundraising event fits with school’s overarching value - Koinonia: ‘Support one another, celebrate with one another, and be united in what we do.’

The top fundraisers were Dylan Simpson (Year 1), who raised £98; Sasha Body (Year 6), who raised £65; and sister and brother duo, Isla Quick (Year 5) and Toby Quick (Year 1) with a combined total of £119 (pictured above).

‘I'm so impressed that these enterprising primary school children managed to raise such a huge amount! Big congratulations,’ says Phil Pugsley, Amigos CEO. ‘Your efforts will change lives in Uganda.’

Since the school smashed their fundraising target, they have also decided to sponsor a young person at Kira Farm Development Centre in 2019 – a vocational training centre run by Amigos in Uganda.

A huge well done to all the children who took part!
